Copenhagen Workshop, June 2000 | ||
An ”ad hoc meeting” of the above mentioned working group was held previous to the ASLO 2000 Conference in Copenhagen (for the list of participants see attachment 1). According to the terms of references expressed in the report from the BMB NEMOs meeting in Parnu, Estonia, the following topics were discussed: Klaipeda Database The group agreed to improve the Klaipeda database of non-indigenous species in the Baltic Sea. Working group members volunteered to shortly prepare comprehensive reports on additional introduced species presently not covered in a detailed format. Options to publish the printed version of the Klaipeda database were discussed with several scientific printing houses who expressed their high interest to publish the database either as a booklet or even as supplement of a scientific journal. Public Awareness As discussed at the last meeting in Estonia, an awareness campaign should make relevant information available to the public, researchers and other interested bodies. The layout of posters and handouts was discussed in detail during the last meeting in Parnu. The Posters will be prepared until the end of 2000 providing information on selected invaders in the Baltic Sea. It was agreed that the existing Internet homepage of the BMB NEMO should include curriculum vitae (see last report for details) of all active members of the group which partly have been prepared already. Lack of knowledge on Impact As agreed in Parnu, cost calculations to compensate the negative effects of introduced species in Europe are lacking, but would to a great extend support the public awareness campaign (see above). Relevant information will be gathered and distributed via the Internet database and the posters. Next meeting It is recommended to arrange the next meeting not later than in the end of 2000 to make sure that the above mentioned objectives can be taken care of in an appropriate time frame.
