Professor in Marine botany since 1984, with more than 35 years of experience from marine research and more than 15 years experience in introduced aquatic species and their impact on biodiversity, environment and economy. A wide experiences in ecology and ecophysiology of macroalgae both in the Baltic Sea and on the Swedish west coast, harmful algal blooms as well as marine systems ecology (including animal-plant interactions) Participated in the Swedish EPA reference groups to deve-lop their “Policy on the Introduction and Spread of Non-Native and Genetically Modified Organisms”, and to develop and formulate “Environmen-tal quality criteria for coasts and seas”. Extended review work on exotic algae in European waters and arranged a workshop at the Inter-national Phycological Congress in North Carolina (1991) to discuss the risks with introduced species (especially toxic algal cysts in ballast water) and genetically modified organisms when cultivating seaweeds. On several occasions been involved in evaluating the risks of and further spread of introduced algae (Undaria, Sargassum, Caulerpa, Porphyra) as well as some harmful algal blooms (incl. phytoplankton resting stages) and produced a status report on introduced algae in ICES country, covering introductions of both seaweeds and phytoplankton as well as higher plants since the beginning of last century Member of several international working groups and participated in several international seminars on introduced species:
- International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES), Working Group on Introductions and Transfers of Marine Organisms (WGITMO); since 1987
- Baltic Marine Biologists (BMB) Working Group Non-Indigenous Estuarine and Marine Organisms; since start
- ICES Study Group on Marine Biocontrol of Invasive Species (SGMBIS); since start
- ICES Study Group on Ballast Water and Sediment (SGBWS); since start
- International Symposium Paris, France, March 13-15, 1997 "Dynamics of invasive marine species: application to the expansion of Caulerpa taxifolia in the Mediterranean" (Chairperson)
- Invited to speak on introduced species at two international seminars at Ocean 98, Lisbon, Portugal, June 1998

European Concerted Action Study: Testing Monitoring Systems for Risk Assessment of Harmful Introductions by Ships to European Waters (funded by the EU 1998-2000) in which six European countries (Finland, Germany, Ireland, Sweden, United Kingdom (England and Scotland), Lithuania and several experts from elsewhere (e.g. North America, some Mediterranean Countries, Australia and Asia) were involved. The IMO (International Maritime Organization) was also a partner of this study. The EU project was linked with ICES WGITMO and ICES/IOC/IMO SGBWS for the duration of the project. The main objective of this Concerted Action was to com-pare and harmonise various sampling methods of ballast water and to study their effectiveness for sampling. Further objectives of this Concerted Action included: state of the art of ballast water studies, case histories of selected introduced species, assessing potential treatment options of ballast water, development of public awareness material, assessing European waters as potential donor area and documentation of European studies on introduced species in the past.
Experiences from a pilot project of sampling ballast water in Sweden with special emphasis on phytoplankton.
Supervisor to Ph.D and M.Sc projects on Sargassum muticum.
